Membership of the association is automatic for every Malaysian postgraduate student of the University of Otago.
In addition to postgraduate members, Sarjana Otago also consists of associate members who are spouses of the postgraduate members, non-Malaysian postgraduate students, postgraduate students from other New Zealand universities or any interested person. The associate membership, however, is subject to the discretion of the Executive Committee.

Rights of Postgraduate Members
The right to take part in all activities organised by Sarjana Otago and use any facilities provided.
The right to speak, suggest, name, support and vote any candidate for any Executive post during the election of Executive Committee in the Annual General Meeting.
The right to be elected as a candidate and appointed as a member of the Executive Committee.
Rights of Associate Members
The associate members enjoy the same rights as the postgraduate members, except the right to be elected as a candidate and appointed as a member of the Executive Committee.
Fees
Every postgraduate members has the duty to pay an annual membership fee of NZD10.
